30 Years Ago December 29, 1989 Cora Rasmussen, 90, of Gladbrook, passed away Wednesday evening at the Westbrook Acres Nursing Home. Her death was attributed to heart failure. Pvt. John A. Johannsen has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. Jodee Lee Miller, daughter of Marion and Beverly Miller, Gladbrook, became the bride of Dean Edward Ryherd, son of Donald and Jill Ryherd, Wellsburg, on December 2. Happy New Year 1990. 40 Years Ago January 4, 1980 Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Knaack of Gladbrook are very proud to announce the engagement of their daughter, Marcia Ellen, to Dennis L. Clubine, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Clubine of Reinbeck. Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Paustian, Reinbeck, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Hilda M. Poland, 85, former Gladbrook resident, passed away at the Clarksville Community Nursing Center Friday afternoon. Mrs. Anna D. Busch, 76, of Gladbrook, passed away at the Westbrook Nursing Center Monday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Craig Harders announce the birth of their daughter, Jennifer Marie, born December 26. To welcome her at home are her brother, Brandon, and her sister, Jaime. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Harders of Lincoln and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Ehmen of Holland. Roy Wilhelmi, 97, passed away December 29 at the Marshalltown Area Community Hospital. A fire destroyed the mobile home of the Charles Aldrich family Saturday afternoon about four miles southeast of Garwin. 50 Years Ago December 26, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Schlicht, who live southeast of Gladbrook, are the parents of a son, Michael Ray, born December 18. He has a three year old brother, James Allen. Mrs. Elmer (Marlys) Geiter, 53, passed away December 17, at the Grundy Memorial Hospital after suffering a series of strokes since the first part of November. Miss Nancy Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph F. Miller, of Marshalltown, became the bride of Van Craig Volkens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Volkens, of Gladbrook, on December 6. 60 Years Ago December 25, 1959 Mr. and Mrs. Eldon H. Wiese of Gladbrook, announce the engagement of their daughter, Karen A., to Loren P. Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Larson of Ames. Miss Jennie Lynn Zink, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alva A. Zink, Gladbrook, became the bride of Laurice Streyffeler of Hubbard. 70 Years Ago December 23, 1949 Walter Sonkens was fatally injured and his son, Vern, seriously injured about noon Monday when the truck in which they were riding was struck by a Chicago Great Western freight train in Marshalltown. Both were taken to the hospital where Walter passed away early Thursday morning. Vern is reported in good condition at present. After the accident that killed her husband and injured her son, Mrs. Walter Sonkens, 49, passed away December 19 at her home of a heart attack. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Caster, of Des Moines, purchased the Sunnyside Cafe this week from Mrs. Florence Fox and will hold their opening on December 29. Mrs. Trena Von Deese Kaput, 98, of Beaman, passed away December 13 at the home of her son, Reent Kaput, in Minnesota. Mrs. Marcia Hladik Wrage, 75, a former resident of Gladbrook, passed away in the St. Thomas hospital in Marshalltown on Monday. 80 Years Ago December 22, 1939 Over 825 sacks of candy and treats were dispensed Saturday in Gladbrook. In the Woman’s Club decorating contest, judged Friday evening, Mrs. Harry Foster was awarded first place. Miss Ella Hildebrand, 57, passed away at her home south of Gladbrook last Thursday by a cerebral hemorrhage. Mrs. Anna Snyder, 70, passed away December 24 at the State Hospital in Independence. 90 Years Ago December 26, 1929 John Lamken passed away December 21. Peter Hansen, a well known farmer of Lincoln township, passed away at the Deaconess hospital in Marshalltown last Thursday, following a series of operations. Fourteen men now are confined in the Tama County jail and this is the largest number since Sheriff E. O. Harris went into office three years ago.
