30 Years Ago November 24, 1989 Several break-ins in Gladbrook occurred last Sunday morning, November 19 between the hours of 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. Gaining entrance either through the front or back door of Mike’s Tap, Napa Auto, and Schade’s Lime & Rock were robbed of mostly cash and some merchandise. There was an attempted break-in at TeKippe’s Jack & Jill. The Tama County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the robberies and no arrests have been made. The Gladbrook Insurance Agency and Sandy’s Flowers both hosted Grand Openings in Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Loren Busch will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Joel and Lori Mohr of Bettendorf, Iowa, are the proud parents of a baby girl, Holly Ann, born on November 17. She is welcomed home by a brother, Christopher. Grandparents are Jerome and Joan Sendelbach, Tiffin, Ohio, and Paul and Donna Mohr, Gladbrook. 40 Years Ago November 30, 1979 Hazel Jipp was named Lincoln’s “Most Outstanding Citizen”. Announcement is being made of the engagement and approaching marriage of Linda Teefey, Kansas City, Missouri, and Samuel Skare, Kansas City. Parents of the couple are Mrs. William Teefey, Kansas City, and Mr. and Mrs. Selmer Skare, of Lincoln. 50 Years Ago November 21, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Dahms of rural Garwin, are announcing the marriage of their daughter, Cynthia, to Robert Borton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Borton, Haverhill, on November 29. Mrs. Doris Fish has leased the Happytime Grill from Cresse and Wayne Copenhaver and will endeavor to serve the same type of food and possibly other specialities from time to time. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lorenz received word that their son, Spc. 4 Rodney Lorenz, was wounded in Vietnam on Friday, November 7. 60 Years Ago November 20, 1959 Neighbors and friends picked and cribbed 110 acres of corn for Clarence Arp. Clarence was injured a month ago when a tree limb fell and fractured his skull while working at the Earl Plaehn farm. The Iowa Electric Light & Power Co. has announced the retirement of Mrs. Kathryn McDowall, bookkeeper in the Gladbrook office effective January 1. 70 Years Ago November 18, 1949 A new $13,000 addition to the Chapel Evangelical United Brethren Church will be formally dedicated on Sunday, November 20, with special programs Sunday morning and in the afternoon. Funeral services for Pfc. Lester O. Thaden, 25, will be held today in the Goettsch Funeral Home with the Rev. E. R. Klaudt, of Lincoln, officiating. Pfc. Thaden was killed during W. W. II will serving in Tunsia, North Africa. He was first reported missing January 31, 1943, and later his body was found in an isolated grave in Tunsia. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bruene are the parents of a baby girl born to them on Thursday morning. They have another girl, Denise. 80 Years Ago November 17, 1939 Lyman T. Ehlers, 26, of Reinbeck, passed away Wednesday morning at St. Francis Hospital in Waterloo, following a pheasant hunting accident. His gun accidentally discharged and the load catching Ehlers in the right shoulder and chest, grazing his lung. The Northern received a letter this week from one of its oldest subscribers, S. A. Gerard. He has been a subscriber for 46 years and just renewed another year. 90 Years Ago November 21, 1929 The other day a number of neighbors went to the rural home of Mrs. Albert Dudolski, two miles southwest of town and gathered eighteen or twenty acres of corn. Miss Francile, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Stauffer, was married Monday afternoon in Kansas City to LeRoy Hall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Hall of Toledo. On Saturday morning George Koster received news that is daughter, Mrs. C. C. Schmidt, gave birth to twin boys, Robert George Schmidt and Richard Henry Schmidt. Mrs. Schmidt is better known in Gladbrook as Miss Alma Koster. Geo. Schreiber, 59, owner of the Schreiber Produce Company, with a branch station in Gladbrook, committed suicide in the Irving Hotel in Waterloo Tuesday night.
