30 Years Ago November 3, 1989 The Municipal Elections will be held Tuesday, November 7, throughout cities in Tama County. Beth Sams and John Elshoff were united in marriage on October 28. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Sams and Mr. John Elshoff, Sr. and the late Rita Elshoff, of Muscatine. 40 Years Ago November 9, 1979 The Boards of Directors of Security Savings Bank of Marshalltown and State Bank of Gladbrook have agreed to a plan of a merger. A son, Jarret Franklin, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Utterback, Jr., of Conrad, on November 4. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Frank Utterback, Sr., of Gladbrook. Les and Deb Parks became the parents of son, Jeffrey David, born October 31. He joins a sister, Michelle, 3 1/2 years old. Grandparents are Mrs. Alma Paustian of Garwin, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Parks of Green Mountain and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Michels of rural Marshalltown. Randy and Becky Judge of LeGrand became the parents of a son, Wade Randall, born November 6. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Richard Judge of Garwin and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Drummer of Melbourne. Mary Jane Kunch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Kunch, Jr., Garwin, and Roger W. Beall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Beall, Marshalltown, exchanged vows on November 3. A Garwin man, Scott Vernon Day, 20, was killed and a Garwin woman, Kaelene Ann Raymond, 18, is in intensive care in critical condition, as a result of a one-vehicle accident. 50 Years Ago October 31, 1969 Gladbrook and Lincoln town elections will be held Tuesday, November 4. Kenneth Wiese, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Wiese, was wounded Thursday, October 23, in Vietnam by a grenade. Mr. and Mrs. George Chizek observed their 25th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Maassen of Long Beach, California, are the parents of a daughter, Maria Lenore, born October 12. They have one other daughter, Cynthia Genella. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Maassen of Gladbrook. 60 Years Ago October 30, 1959 Among the 10,789 students enrolled at The State University of Iowa this fall 84 are from Tama county. Town Elections are set for Tuesday, November 3. Verona Ruth Rohach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Rohach of Garwin, became the bride of Joseph Andrew Ottenheimer, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Ottenheimer of Wilmette, Illinois, on October 10.

70 Years Ago October 28, 1949 Mr. and Mrs. William Lynch will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. School children can start leaving their lunch pails at home, beginning Monday when the hot lunch program is returned to the local schools. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Reuters are the parents of a daughter born to them last Sunday morning. She has been named Patricia. They have two other children, both boys. The Reuters are farmers south of town.

80 Years Ago October 27, 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Jake Johannsen will observe their 25th wedding anniversary. A Hampshire Boar brings a record sale price of $1,250. 90 years Ago October 31, 1929 Dr. Henry Albert, of the State Board of Health, dropped us a line Monday stating that only nine deaths had taken place in Tama County in 1928 from the ravages of tuberculosis. The death rate from the preventable disease is decreasing all over the state. William Weaver, 30, of Toledo, narrowly escaped bleeding to death and Wilson Sweker, of Belle Plaine, suffered a double fracture of the left leg Saturday night in an auto accident just east of Chelsea.
