Gladbrook Auxiliary

October 17, 2019
Northern-Sun Print
This sunny but chilly fall day welcomed many of the residents and Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary members to the Westbrook Acres facility for the October 14th meeting of the organization. Jeanne welcomed the group with al repeating the Pledge to the Flag. Prayer was offered by Chaplain Joyce Swangel. Four officers answered roll call. The minutes of the September meeting were read. No treasurer’s report was given. Jeanne reported on Nat’l President Nik’s ‘Homecoming in the Heartland’ homecoming Oct 3-6 with approx. 200 guests at the activities. Some attended all the activities and some just a day, but Gladbrook is proud of how well the days activities were enjoyed and attended. Friday started with the bus tour to Waterloo and the John Deere Tractor Works, on to Clarks Prosthetics for lunch and to watch how they help anyone including our injured Veterans who require replacement limbs etc. The Clydesdale horse/wagon rides were a hit along with the Pork Producers Iowa Chops and Patsy Cline and the DRM Nuns entertainment. The Saturday Matchstick Museum had everyone in awe with Pat Acton signing many booklets after which the SAL filled everyone with a fish fry in the Memorial Bldg. Our Junior members did a great job serving both events. A video of Nik’s life was produced by Terri Luehring and a neat way to remember the life of an Iowa Small Town gal. The Legion Riders escorted the buses back and the weekend concluded with a banquet at the Meskwaki Casino Hotel with all listening to the great music of the Iowa Veterans Military Band. Pictures may be seen on the Iowa Legion Auxiliary website. Upcoming Auxiliary activities include: Tama County joint meeting will be on Tuesday, October 22 7pm in Elberon with Stacy Bane, IVH Aux Rep as Speaker on her job and the Gift Wrap in December. Memorial Service for all Legion and Aux members lost this past year. Juniors Operation Christmas Child where shoeboxes are filled for children in need across the world. Kids Shopping Day is Saturday Dec 14 at PUCC again, with items for men/teen boys and volunteers are needed. If you have items, call Becky, Karen or Jeanne and they will be picked up. Donations are welcome. This is also the Lion’s Soup Day with a cookie walk by local 4-Hers. The IVH Halloween Party is on October 31 with escorts needed by 12:30pm in the Althea dining room. Third District Fall Conference will also be at the IVH with the Legion in Malloy LRC and Aux in Whitehill chapel with registration at 8am. Senior Citizens will be served by Westbrook at the Memorial Bldg at 11:30 on Friday Nov 8. Call in Reservations. The December event served by the Auxiliary will be in the Festival of Trees on Friday December 6, a week earlier due to other events. Our Veterans Day meeting will be Monday, Nov 11 with a 6:30 potluck and dignitaries invited. Americanism chairman, Lisa Reinhard will have a Veterans Day program at Westbrook. All veterans are invited on Monday, Nov 11 at 2pm. A reminder that 2019-2020 Auxiliary dues are now being collected. Please think about sending or giving them to Jolene or Jeanne soon. We like to have all collected by Dec 15. Our goal was raised by 1 member and have a goal of 262, one of the largest Units in Iowa. Sue Koster, Education Chair chose the ‘Homecoming Video’ of Niks life as her program to show how anyone can meet challenges, work hard and change their lives and that of others. Everyone enjoyed Terri’s creation as some of us again enjoyed the lighthearted pictures of Nik’s childhood, growing up and on to be National Auxiliary President. Closing prayer was offered by Joyce. Bars, coffee and juice were served to all the residents by Candice Bartel and Barb Bereczki.
