30 Years Ago August 25, 1989 Melissa Volkens, 6, and brother, Brandon, 4, were crowned Queen and King of “Kinderfest” held in Readlyn. Our AFS student for 1989-90 is Ying Chow from Hong Kong. She likes to be called Zoe. She will be living with the Dean and Linda Storey family in Reinbeck. Mr. and Mrs. Rhea Carstedt will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Karrie Lynn Richardson and Verlyn Ray Bartling of Vinton, along with their parents Joyce Richardson of Coralville, Mike Richardson of Toledo and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Venenga of San Diego, California, announce their engagement and up-coming marriage. Ramona Sonkens, Marion, took top honors this summer at the All Iowa Fair held in Cedar Rapids. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Otto, of Champagne, Illinois, are the proud to announce the birth of their son, Joshua Dean, born on August 21. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Otto, Gladbrook, and Vernon Heck of Guttenberg and Beverly Berens of Garnavillo. 40 Years Ago August 31, 1979 Miss Cathy S. Chatterton and Cornell W. Gethmann exchanged wedding vows on August 4. Parents of the couple are Sylvia S. Chatterton of Muscatine, Dale Chatterton, Grandview, and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Gethmann of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Olive announce the engagement of their daughter, Vivian, to Randy Mercer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Mercer of Gladbrook. Dawn Fulster, Gladbrook, was chosen a runner-up in the Sr. Cowgirl Queen contest at the Iowa State Fair. Judy Oettchen and Henry Mentel, Jr., were united in marriage on August 18. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Ervin Oettchen of Beaman and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Mentel Sr., of Gladbrook. Mrs. Laura Luethje was selected by Westbrook Acres residents for the Iowa Health Care Association Adult Volunteer of the Year Award. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Wittgreve of Reinbeck are the parents of a son, Shannon Michael, born August 23. Shannon will be welcomed home by a brother, Jeremy, who is 3. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bru of Gladbrook and Mr. and Mrs. John Wittgreve of Reinbeck. Gene and Barb Seda of rural Gladbrook became the parents of son, Brian Frederick, born August 23. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Fred Allen of Ames and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Seda of Gladbrook. The long wait is over, after presenting signed petitions, meetings with supervisors and conservation officials, the road around Union Grove Lake is being resurfaced this week with blacktop. Mr. and Mrs. George Kunch Jr., of Garwin, announce the upcoming marriage of their daughter, Mary Jane, to Roger Beall, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Beall of Marshalltown. Michael and Betty Mathern became the parents of their first child, a daughter, Kelli Lynn, born August 20. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Harold Untiedt of Garwin and Mr. and Mr.s Dale Mathern of Mayer, Arizona.s 50 Years Ago August 22, 1969 This is our annual “Vacation Issue”. The paper is small, but’s thats because we’re taking the week off. The printing office will be closed all week August 18 to the 25th. Dave and Jim Lebeda and Irwin Goos signed a lease for the renting of the new building recently constructed by the Gladbrook Town and Country Building Co., and located one-fourth mile east of Gladbrook on Highway 96. Mr. and Mrs. Gary Billerbeck of Waterloo are the adoptive parents of a daughter, Tina Marie, born on June 22. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Fish and Leonard Billerbeck are grandparents. 60 Years Ago August 21, 1959 The faculty for the Gladbrook Community School was recently completed by the hiring of five new teachers for 1959-60 school year by the board of education. David Mace will teach junior high subjects. Mrs. Edythe Monk will teach 6th grade. Mrs. Carol Porter will teach 5th grade. Mrs. Susan Bartleson will teach 1st grade. Mrs. Omallee Wickersham will also teach 5th grade. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Stewart of Newton announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Sara Jeanne, to Delmar J. Steiert, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Steiert of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Merle Luckinbill became the parents of a son, Clinton Douglas, born on August 19. Audrey Joyce Clausen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Clausen of Gladbrook, became the bride of Thomas L. Kuhl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kuhl of Beaman, on August 14. The Gethmann Construction Co. of Gladbrook was awarded a $404,000 contract last week to build a new high school at Ames. 70 Years Ago August 19, 1949 Dick Luethje, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry O. Luethje, of Gladbrook, took Reserve Champion honors with his Angus calf at the Tama County 4-H Fair held in Traer of last week. Gladbrook’s annual Corn Carnival once more gets underway today. The Gladbrook Independent School will open Monday, August 29. Lynn Reinhard has been elected the new secretary of the Gladbrook Independent School Board and will assume the position the first of September. 80 Years Ago August 18, 1939 Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Wentzien are the parents of a third son. He has two brothers, Irwin, Jr., and Paul. Ward Laufer, Sinclair Station lessee, is happy to announce that he now has a new addition on his oil station enabling him to give all types of service. The new room has a grease rack, wash rack, tool table, etc. 90 Years Ago August 22, 1929 Wilhelmine Keiser (nee Bruene), 68, passed away at Gladbrook. Roy Hamilton is in the Grundy County jail under bonds of $5,000 and his brother, Lester, is in a Marshalltown hospital as a result of a fight staged by the brothers Friday night at the farm home of Mrs. Fred Rogers, near Conrad. According to all stories, the encounter was over a girl, Faye Rogers. Cato Fortner Mann, son of T. E. Mann, was married on August 17, to Miss Alma Rasmussen of Fairmont, Minnesota.
