Gayle Appelgate Murtishaw, 82

Gayle Appelgate Murtishaw, 82, of Silver Spring, MD, passed away August 5, 2019 after a sudden attack of aggressive acute myeloid leukemia leading to leukostasis. She was born August 7, 1936 in Marshall County, IA to Leroy and Gladys (James) Appelgate. She attended a one-room country school through her primary years, graduating from Gladbrook High School in 1953. Gayle earned her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Colorado and her Masters of Library Science from University of Maryland. She worked as a librarian in a number of places, including the Iowa Commission for the Blind and McGill University in Montreal, Canada. She and her husband David Batty were owners of CDB Enterprises, Inc., an International Information Storage and Retrieval Consultancy based in Maryland, until his death in early 2013. Gayle loved cooking, entertaining, gardening and playing various board games. She enjoyed her retirement to the fullest after an extensive career in library science. Gayle is survived by her husband Thomas Ray Murtishaw and his family; her daughter Sarah Jazs, step sons Phillip (Lina) Batty and Miles (Heather) Batty, brothers Bruce (Joan) Appelgate, and Merlyn (Connie) Appelgate, sister Vivian LeVier, very dear Tina McCloud and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Services will be held August 17 at 2pm at Riderwood Chapel at 3140 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904, with inurement at a later date in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Gladbrook, Iowa.
