“An accurate count, we want to get right,” John Cook, a partnership specialist for the eight-state region for the U.S. Census headquartered in Chicago, told the Tama County Board of Supervisors at their regular weekly meeting on Monday morning, Aug. 5. Cook asked supervisors to form a local group- a “Complete Count Commission” of a “few select persons” to get Census information before the public in the county. “In Iowa we need 25,000 applicants,” Cook said. “We want to hire locally.” “I could stand in the Courthouse yard and preach the “Gospel of the Census” until I’m blue in the face,” Cook said in urging the local involvement which he said is most effective. Cook said the importance of the Census is related directly to population and the allocation of $675 billion every year in federal aid. He said a study of the 2010 Census results revealed 4 1/2 % to 5% of children age zero to five years in he United States were not counted. Supervisors were left by Cook with a decision to sign a letter of intent to form the Complete Count Commission. In other business on Monday the supervisors: •tabled a proposal by Michelle Alvarado to take possession of a tax deed property at 702 S. Church St. in Toledo for payment of $5,000 of the $5,750 delinquent taxes due from the previous owner. Alvarado is to meet with the Toledo City Council to review a special assessment of $1.250 due on the proeprty this year. Alvarado said she would raze the existing house on the property and build a new home on the site. •reviewed utility permits for Grundy REC in Grant Township and Windstar in Indian Village Township. •approved re-appointment of Steve Baier, Tama, to a six-year term on the Civil Service Board. •approved weekly claims totaling $165,407.
