30 Years Ago August 4, 1989 Jill Shari Dierks and Douglas Alan Lutes exchanged wedding vows on July 1. Parents of the couple are Al and Lois Dierks of Gladbrook and Bob and Sharon Lutes of Conrad. Announcement is being made of the engagement and approaching marriage of Vicki Vlotho and Terry Purvis. Parents of the couple are Rodney Vlotho and Shirley Crosser of Eldora and mr. and Mrs. Paul Purvis of Gladbrook. Miss Erin Petty, age 11, daughter of Duane Petty, will be competing August 4th and 5th as a finalist in the Miss Iowa American Pre-Teen Pageant to held a Stouffers Five Seasons Hotel, Cedar Rapids. Erin is the granddaughter of Dale and Marilyn Petty of Gladbrook. Robert and Liz Buck, Cedar Falls, are the proud parents of baby girl, Sabrina Christine, born July 18. Grandparents are Jim Balfour of Newton, Kansas and Bob and Henrietta Buck of Grundy Center. Mildred Harmsen celebrated her 80th birthday. 40 years Ago August 10, 1979 The Gladbrook School will open Thursday, August 23. The Garwin School will open August 27. Meeting in special session, Thursday, August 2, the Gladbrook School Board hired Mr. Charles Earp as elementary principal and instructor of 7th grade reading. Six new staff members have been hired for the 1979-80 school year by the Gladbrook Community School District. Miss Julie Christy will be teaching fifth grade as well as serve as assistant girls’ basketball coach. Charles Earp will be elementary principal as well as teaching seventh grade reading. Jeff Hartz will teach sixth grade. Sandi Krosschell will be teaching elementary and secondary art. Mr. Harlan Nuss will be instrumental music instructor. Kayla Reese will be teaching remedial reading and learning disabilities. Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Benson became the parents of a son, Joshua Leslie, born July 23. Joshua has three brothers, Jeff, 8, Joel, 7, and Jason, 19 months. Grandparents are Mrs. Mary Chizek, of Traer and Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Benson, Reinbeck. Larry and Patti Mathern, of Mayer, Arizona, became the parents of their second child, a son, Jason Duane, Born August 4. Jason has a three-year-old brother, Elijah. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dale Mathern, Mayer, Arizona and Mr. and Mrs. Merle Hall of Garwin. Terri Lynn Hyndman and Roger Dale Luehring were united in marriage July 21st. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hyndman of Churdan and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Luehring of Terril. Mr. and Mrs. Glen R. Aurand, Brutus, Michigan, and Dr. and Mrs. R. E. Gamble, Gladbrook, are happy to announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their children Linda Sue and Ronald Lloyd. Miss Leslie Jane Bruene and William Dean Holl, were married on July 28. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bruene of Gladbrook and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Holl of Nevada. Tama County Sheriff, Mike Quigley, has announced that the new and ninth deputy for Tama County is Jack Prouty, 32. 50 Years Ago August 1, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Everett Budde announce the marriage of their daughter, Patricia Ann, to Tom D. Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Murray of Seymour. The new Gladbrook Community School indoor swimming pool opened Sunday, July 27, and over 200 swimmers enjoyed the facilities on opening day. Miss Nancy Ann Howard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leighton Howard of Gladbrook, became the bride of Charles Moyer, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Moyer, Sr., Traer, on July 26. Miss Mary Susan Wilcox, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Watson of Denver, Colorado and Ryan Keith Tessau, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Tessau of Gladbrook, were united in marriage on July 26. Miss Susan Lynn Sutter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo F. Sutter, Cedar Rapids, and Donald Clow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Duane V. Clow, Gladbrook, were married. Susan Annette Speirs of Gladbrook became the bride of Jerry Hardisty of Corning on July 12. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. James W. Speirs of Gladbrook and Mr. and Mrs. paul F. Hardisty of Corning. 60 Years Ago July 31, 1959 Thanks to the Tama County Farm Bureau, the Gladbrook Commercial Club and the Community BAnquet Committee which was composed of representatives from the various organizations in the community, Gladbrook has a new highway sign at the south edge of town on Highway 96 proclaiming Gladbrook as the home of the 1959 Girls’ State Basketball Champs and home of the Tama Co. 4-H Fair. Cornell Gethmann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Gethmann of Gladbrook, won the fourth annual Pinewood Derby held at Franklin Field in Marshalltown Sunday. 70 Years Ago July 29, 1949 Mrs. Del Williams was installed as president of the Auxiliary of the Gladbrook American Legion Post by Mrs. Hilda Reedy, of Garwin, Thursday of last week. The Gethmann Construction Company of Gladbrook, received the contract for construction of a new grade school building at Garrison, Iowa, last week. Gladbrook will have its first Centurion Monday when Mrs. Anna V. Stearns celebrates he 100th birthday. 80 Years Ago July 28, 1939 Dr. A. F. Walter, who recently celebrated his 82nd birthday and was one of Iowa’s older physicians, has retired from the active practice of medicine. Dr. Walter has sold his practice to his former partner, Dr. L. G. Schaeferle, who will continue to practice medicine in the same location. Miss Dorothy Mae Rehder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore P. Rehder, of Lincoln, and Dr. Robert Sidell Gearhart, son of Mr. and Mrs. N. A. Gearhart, of Hopkinton, were united in marriage July 22. 90 Years Ago August 1, 1929 Hazel M. Smoldt, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Smoldt, Grundy Center, and Raymond F. Wildman of Marshalltown, were united in marriage on July 18. John William Petersen of Gladbrook and Helen Kathryn Hamann, of Beaman, were united in marriage. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Hamann, living four miles northwest of Gladbrook. Those who happened to be looking toward the east about 9:45 Thursday evening saw what to some appeared to be a belated Fourth of July celebration, but which in reality was a falling meteor, one of the most beautiful seen in years
