Lyle Brehm will continue to serve as Tama and Poweshiek county engineer in an bi-annaul 28E sharing agreement for fiscal 2000-2002 renewed by both county board of supervisors on Monday, July 22. The arrangement has been in place since 2002 and serves each county in a variety of management capacites. Brehm told The News-Herald on Tuesday, “I like to say it feels sometimes like being Richie Cunningham (of Happy Days TV series fame) having two dates for the prom at the same time...” He notes the arrangement “Saves money for both counties.” Brehm currently receives $140,858 annually which is divided equally between the two counties. The amount of one-half of the amount is well below the amount of $107,778 which is the average county engineer salary state-wide in an Iowa Association of Counties survey. Under the ongoing agreement, Brehm, a licensed professional engineer, heads the secondary road department for each county and is to share his time equally between the two counties. Under the agreement he is fully responsible for planning, engineering, construction and maintenance while the elected boards of supervisors hold the overall responsibility for4 all county engineering functions. In addition, he also serves as the engineer of record for the Poweshiek County landfill according to the agreement.
