30 Years Ago July 14, 1989 The 67th annual Corn Carnival will be held July 20, 21, and 22. Mike and VaLinda Parsons, Tampa, Florida, are the parents of a baby girl, Meredith Grace, born July 11. Grandparents are Jerry Parsons of Gladbrook, Eleanor Lott of Whitten, and Fred and Shirley Henze of Grundy Center. Great grandparents are C. D. Parsons of Gladbrook and Bertha Henze of Reinbeck. Great great grandparent is Elizabeth Parsons of Gladbrook. Richard and Shirley Stalzer, Haverhill, are the parents of twin sons, Ross Richard and Ryan Lee, born July 10. Grandparents are Leon and Marianne Stalzer, Haverhill, and Marjorie Wegner, Garwin. The babies have twin great uncles, Keith and Kermit Wegner, who were born at the same hospital on August 21, 1942. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Chamberlain of rural Lincoln are pleased to announce the marriage of their son David to Renae Dawn Evans, daughter of Mrs. Karen Hayes and Mr. Robert Lash, on June 21. Last Monday the temperature sign on the Security Bank reached the century mark. Everyone was sweltering in the heat as well as the crops. 40 Years Ago July 20, 1979 The 1979 Tama County Fair will be open at the fairgrounds at Gladbrook, July 30, lasting through August 2. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Oettchen of rural Gladbrook wish to announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Cristy Lynn, to Mr. Mark Jay Pilcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Fred Pilcher of Anamosa, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Wiebensohn, Cedar Falls, became the proud parents of twin girls, Rene Jean and Carrie Lynn, born on July 11. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Ben Juchems, Conrad, and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Wiebensohn. Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Patten of Holiday Lake, Brooklyn, announce the engagement of their daughter, Judith Hansen, to Lawrence Russell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Noel Boldt, Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Irwin H. Wentzien of Saratoga, California, are the parents of a daughter, Judith Louise, born June 3.They have three other children, Chris, 7 years, Tom, 4 years, and Elizabeth, 2 years. Mr. and Mrs. I. H. Wentzien of Gladbrook are the grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Fritz Viering of Beaman announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Ilene Nancy, to Dennis Gene Cook, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cook of Schaller. Wolverton Farm has the All-Time, All-Breed Index Boar at Iowa Swine testing Station at Ames. A new boar test station record has been set by a Yorkshire boar, TORNADO, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bruene of Gladbrook. The boar has gained an average of 2.37 pounds per day while on test and had a feed efficiency mark of 2.34 pounds of feed per pound of gain. Its index is 235. 60 Years Ago July 10, 1959 Cynthia L. Staker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Staker, became the bride Wednesday of Dennis D. Dirks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dirks, Reinbeck. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Poland received an announcement that a son was born to their son, Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Poland, Compton, California. This is their first child and has been named William Walter. Mr. and Mrs. Harold Clausen announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Audrey Joyce, to Thomas L. Kuhl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kuhl of Beaman. 70 Years Ago July 8, 1949 Nancy E. Candill, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. J. E. Candill and William H. Johnston, son of Robert Johnston, of Iowa City, were united in marriage on July 2. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Landt are the parents of a son born to them on July 5. They have two other children, a girl, Ellen and a boy, Michael. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Schendel, Gladbrook, on July 4. Dr. L. G. Schaeferle has moved into his new office at the west end of Main Street next to Fairchild Implements. Rita C. Lynch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Lynch, Marshalltown, became the bride of Sydney W. Handorf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rondo Handorf, Marshalltown. 80 Years Ago July 7, 1939 Kathryn Rehder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Rehder, Gladbrook, and Dr. Wayne l. Wishart, of Memphis, Missouri, were united in marriage on June 13. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wescott and son, Sidney Turmbull, took over the management of their newly purchase Sunnyside Cafe last Saturday. 90 Years Ago July 11, 1929 The Waterloo-Des Moines air express was discontinued Saturday for the remainder of the summer. Miss Genevieve Sissel, the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Sissel of Cedar Falls, and Irvin Wollesen of Lincoln, were united in marriage on July 3. Walter Harmsen, 23, a molder rooming at 506 Second Street west, is held in the city jail to answer the charge of a statutory crime on a complaint of the parents of a 13 year old girl, with bail fixed at $5,000. The officers are still at work on the Rouse murder case in Montour and believe they will be able to place a hand on the murderer in short time. The many friends of “Grandpa’ Wentzien were shocked Monday morning when the church bells began to toll, telling of the death of their good friend during the night. Heinrich Herman Wentzien, 93, of Gladbrook passed away July 8.
