30 Years Ago June 30, 1989 At the Tama County Legion and Auxiliary joint meeting last Tuesday, June 27, the Legion performed a flag burning ceremony to properly destroy tattered and worn flags. John and Marcia Plett, rural Gladbrook, are the parents of a son, Matthew Plett, born June 22. He has a brother, Michael, at home. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Plett, Marshalltown and maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Walter P. Herr, Greenfield. Linda Morse and David Meyer were married June 3. Parents of the couple are Tom and Joan Morse of Plymouth, Wisconsin, and Paula Meyer, Gladbrook, and the late Henry Meyer. Green Mountain-Garwin held on to their number one rating in the latest prep poll. GMG’s record is 15-0 and No. 1 in Class 1A. 40 Years Ago July 6, 1979 Arthur J. Petermeier, 45, rural Garwin, was killed Tuesday night July 3, when his motorcycle crashed during a heavy thunderstorm. Karen Ann Louviere and John Marten Hooper exchanged wedding vows June 23. Karen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldridge Louviere of Broussard, Louisiana. John is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Hooper of Gladbrook. Lynna Brown became the bride of Dennis Hauser June 23. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Brown of Gladbrook and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hauser of Vancouver, Washington. Sherri Lee Corwin became the bride of Steven Eugene Cheville June 30. Parents of the couple are Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Corwin, Marshalltown, and Mr. and Mrs. Wendell H. Cheville, Gladbrook. 50 Years Ago June 27, 1969 Mr. and Mrs. Robert Boldt became the parents of a daughter, Tamara Lynn, born June 24. Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Dean Boldt, and maternal grandmother is Mrs. l. G. Schaeferle. Miss Karen Sievers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Sievers of Gladbrook, and Craig Handorf, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ward Handorf of Gladbrook exchanged wedding vows June 7. Lester Schade, owner and operator of Shady’s Recreation Center, has purchased the Ward Bates building, formerly housing the Turner Farm Store and more recently Klinefelter’s Uptown Farm Store. After extensive remodeling and decorating Mr. Schade will move his pool hall and canteen service to the new location, hopefully by the first of August. 60 Years Ago June 26, 1959 Miss Marion Champlin de Booy of San Francisco, California, and 1st Lt. irwin Heinrich Wentzien, Jr., of Gladbrook exchanged wedding vows. The bride is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George de Booy and the bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Irwin H. Wentzien of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Clarksean of Ward, South Dakota, announce the marriage of their daughter, Ruth Ann, to Earl Niedermann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Niedermann, of Gladbrook. Miss Mary Jane Biggs of Fort Dodge and Leonard Charles Luethje of Gladbrook exchanged wedding vows. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Bonnette of Marshalltown. 70 Years Ago June 24, 1949 William Paustian, 81, passed away early Friday,morning at the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown. Shirley Ann Alston, 11, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Alston, of Waterloo, passed away of a brain hemorrhage Friday in Tama after she ran into a moving truck. Ira Sanderson, 62, farmer northeast of Beaman, was charged with intent to commit great bodily injury Monday after an alleged attack on Fred Pierce, Union, Iowa, plumbing contractor and his helper, Howard Clemons. Erlene Louise Rattray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Rattray, of Beaman, became the bride of Kenneth C. Barfels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Barfels, Jr. of Beaman, June 15. The mutilated body of a 22-year-old Morrison mother, Mrs. Harvey A. Stahlhut, was found in a walk-in refrigerator of a tavern she and her husband operated om Morrison, early Thursday morning. 80 Years Ago June 23, 1939 Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hoppe are rejoicing over the arrival of a daughter born Saturday. This week Earl Koobs moved his barbershop across the street and into the building owned by Mrs. John Buck and recently vacated by Dr. Alma E. Johnson. Miss Janette Neil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Will Neil, living southwest of Reinbeck, was united in marriage to George Cold, son of William Cold, Grundy Center, June 21. Miss Hildegarde Wrage, youngest daughter of Mrs. Mary Wrage, became the bride of Lawrence Gray, son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Gray, of Sidney. 90 Years Ago June 27, 1929 Friday morning small boys and firecrackers caused a little excitement at the rear of the Connor store, when someone threw a cracker into a pan of kerosene and rubbish near the door. In and instant there was a blaze that made things look shaky in that section of the city for a few moments. The fire company was called but the fire extinguishers in the hands of neighboring business men had the fire under control. Starting Monday, July 1, the price of all shaves will be advanced from 20 cents to 25 cents.
