We wish to extend our sympathies to the families of Mary Luethje, Gwen Lacina, Arlene {Fuzzy} Goos and Roxanne Palmer. We will miss them all. Please keep the families in your thoughts and prayers. National Volunteer Week, April 7th – 13th, is the official time to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers at the local, state, and national levels. This week is usually celebrated the third week of April, but it is scheduled to avoid springtime religious holidays. This week was first celebrated in the U.S. in 1972. The national observance began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing the week as an annual celebration of volunteering. We feel so very fortunate and blessed to have such wonderful volunteers here at Westbrook. We appreciate them and for the kindness and joy they bring with them every time they visit. April is Dog Appreciation Month. Our residents love pet visits. If you have a dog you would like to bring in this month please let Michele or Marilyn, in Activities, know and we can set something up. We’d love to have regular animal visits every month. Thank you! Next month we will be celebrating National Nursing Home Week, May 12th – 18th. This year’s theme is “Live Soulfully.” I always like to have lots of fun things going on for the residents and staff. So, I’m asking if you would, please bring in a wedding picture, preferably a copy, of your family member and we will guess “Who’s Who?” Please give it to Michele or Marilyn in Activities. Thank you!

A note from the Administrator: It is so beautiful to be able to see the sunshine lately!  I want to extend a very sincere THANK YOU to each and every one of you for being patient with us while we were restricting visiting for those couple of weeks!  This helped tremendously in the spreading of further sickness.  Although I know it was very difficult to stay away from your loved ones, this prevented many others from becoming sick.  Again, it is very much appreciated! We look forward to patio days, fresh air and sunshine in April!  God Bless!  We are saddened to announce that our Dietician, Amy has taken a position elsewhere and will be leaving Westbrook Acres.  We wish her the Best of Luck in her future endeavors and thank her for her many years here at Westbrook. In lieu of Amy leaving, we are excited to announce that we have hired Shari Broome as the Dietician.  Shari has over 20 years of experience in long term care experience as a Dietician.  She is a mother of 4 and enjoys living in Denver, IA.  We are excited to see the experience that she will bring to Westbrook!        Kelly Larson MBA, LNHA

April 21st - 27th is Administrative and Healthcare Administrative Professionals’ Week. It recognizes administrative assistants, office managers, and other office staff.

Resident of the Month – Alma Hass Alma was born on May 16th, 1921. She was the oldest of four children. Her parents farmed in Tama Co. in the Vining and Clutier area. Alma went to school through the 8th grade and then helped on the farm. When she was old enough she babysat and worked in restaurants. She moved to Marshalltown to become a nanny, which was cooking, cleaning house, and taking care of the children. She was a hard worker. She met her husband Leslie at the Forest Park Ballroom. They married and had 6 children. They stayed living in the Vining area but then moved to Cedar Falls, Garwin and Marshalltown, where he worked for several farmers. After retiring, her and her husband traveled. She has a son-in-law who is a pilot. He would take them all over the world. Alma took an art class and painted several pictures. She was a Blue Ribbon baker with her bread baking skills, rolicky and kolaches. Her house was always surrounded by flowers, and she had a big garden. Everything she touched seemed to grow. She was very particular about everything she did. I know from our church services she knows the words to every song we sing and loves to sing to them. One of her neighbors always said your children are very proper and neat for only wearing hand me downs. Deb said they never left the house with a stitch out of place. Alma has 12 grandkids, 15 great grandkids as far as Deb could remember. We have enjoyed Alma so much and her story telling and the kindness that she always shows others. Thank you Alma for sharing your life with us.

Dementia Support Group We have decided to do Dementia Support Group every other month. We are hoping to get more attendance by offering this group every other month and have also changed the time to 3:00pm. Please join us in spreading the word! We hope to see many of you on April 30th!
