Volunteer/new member soup supper Winter has finally come to Iowa with 2-3 inches of snow on the ground this weekend and bitter cold temps and winds. Some activities were delayed or canceled, but the Legion (Terry Schmitz) has the chili and oyster stew prepared and are ready to serve a 6:30 supper to invited new members from the Legion and Auxiliary and our volunteers from the G-L Ambulance and Fire departments. A fair group of hungry members weathered the cold to listen to Kay Lowry give her Legislative Report. She touched on the many issues facing our legislatures from health care, immigration reform, building a barrier on our southern border to deter Central American caravans of immigrants and their wish to come to the U.S. to providing funds for government workers and end the 28 day(?) shutdown. The American Legion has initiated a program to help Coast Guard veterans with $1500 grants to help as they are part of the shutdown victims, which is appreciated. Nikki Clapp was present to tell of her experience decorating and riding on the first Rose Bowl parade float entry for The American Legion’s 100th Anniversary on New Year’s Day. Just one of the many awesome experiences she will have in the next year. The SAL reports new members to a total membership of 39. We adjourned to our separate meetings. Jeanne called the meeting to order: Marilyn Carstensen showed us the ‘plastic bag homeless vet mat’ she is making. Everyone is collecting bags and Cathy Barnes has also started a mat. Jolene has directions if anyone is interested. Five officers answered roll call. Correspondence was read from the Martha Gamble and Paulette Boerm families for memorial books placed in the library in their memory, from the Great Western Bank for the Christmas plate for printing our newsletter and a Christmas picture card from Erin Andersland telling about her siblings. She was the granddaughter of Charlotte and Earl Steiert. The Auxiliary is one over its membership goal of 260 (for 261) and we appreciate every one of our members for their loyal support. Our new members are Paulette Boerm, Laurie Street, Renae Miller and Kathrin Wiemers. Juniors added to our roster are Lyla Eilers and Whitley Winkowitsch. Membership pins will be presented to new Senior Members. The reading of the minutes was dispensed with. A printed finance report for Nov, Dec and Jan was presented. The Gladbrook Library/Gladbrook Auxiliary are sponsoring Linda McCann to do a program on Iowa’s part during WWII. The first one was on prohibition and this program is on POW Work Camps in Iowa. Tentative plans are for Thursday, March 28 6:30pm at the Library. Watch for further announcements. Jeanne reported that Jordan Sherman, daughter of Jackie and Gr Granddaughter of Roger Rohweder will be the third generation of the family to attend Girls State in June. Jasmin Tervan a Gladbrook Junior and granddaughter of Betty Dahms will be attending through the Reinbeck Auxiliary Unit. Our next meeting will be Feb 18 with supper served at 6:30 to Legion/SAL and Aux by Mandy Koester, Kay Lowry and Jolene Denbow. Note: a special program is being planned with a power point presentation of the last 100 years of the Gladbrook Legion for its anniversary on Monday evening, March 18 (note date). Plan to attend as we have pictures of all the Legion projects, floats and parades going waaaaay back on Monday starting with a 6:30 potluck. Other dates to remember: Feb 1-3, Fri – Sun: Mid-winter state convention at Airport Holiday Inn in Des Moines Tues & Wed, Feb 5, 6: Auxiliary sewing days 9am in Memorial bldg. We have materials ready, bring a machine if you can or just need scissors. Bring a can of soup (not cream) for Pat’s Dump Soup for Tuesday lunch. Men are welcome. Tues &Wed, Mar 5-6: Auxiliary cleaning days. Shifts 9-noon and 1-4. Sign-up with Jolene or Joyce for your favorite job. We will also be painting the bathrooms and bar in February. Meeting adjourned.
