30 Years Ago January 13, 1989 January 15-21 has been proclaimed as Jaycee Week in Gladbrook by Mayor Keith DeWitt. Teresa Ann Goettsch and Timothy Arthur Wingert were married November 5th. Julie Jo Niedermann and Troy Robert Underhill exchanged their wedding vows on December 30, 1988. 40 Years Ago January 19, 1979 Mayor Earl Eggers earlier this week proclaimed January 21-29, 1979, as Jaycee Week in Gladbrook. Kathleen Mundt and Michael Henningsen exchanged wedding vows on December 23, 1978. Mrs. Hazel Goos, 78, of Gladbrook, passed away at the Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook Tuesday afternoon. Henry Stamp, 79, of Garwin, passed away January 16 at MACH where he had been a patient for two days following a lengthy illness. Mr. and Mrs. George Dahms will celebrate their Golden wedding anniversary on January 29. In January you can expect sub-zero temperatures and snow in Iowa. Both have plagued this area as well as the entire Midwest. Snow started to fall Thursday morning of last week and by early Sunday morning dumping five to six inches of new snow. According to the Waterloo Weather Bureau that gives the area a total of thirteen inches on the ground.

50 Years Ago January 3, 1969 Mrs. Thomas (Dorthea) Carroll, 73, of Genoa, Illinois, one of the large family of Claus and Minnie Mohr Raum, deceased, who farmed in the Gladbrook and Reinbeck communities for many years, passed away December 18, at her home in Genoa, Illinois, after a brief illness. Kenneth Gethmann of Gladbrook and Clyda Hall of St. Louis, Missouri, were united in marriage on December 30.

60 Years Ago January 9, 1959 Geneseo, Dysart, Dinsdale, and Gladbrook moved into the semi-finals of the Girl’s Tama County Basketball Tournament at Gladbrook last week. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred J. Walton announce the engagement of their daughter, Karen Louise, to AA Robert Dean, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Niedermann, all of Gladbrook. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Groth will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on January 17. Bruce Dean Haynes, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Haynes, was born November 9, 1954 at Grundy Center. He became ill with the measles, complications set in, and he was taken to the hospital where he passed away January 1, 1959.

70 Years Ago January 7, 1949 Ray Rudebeck, farmer northeast of Gladbrook, was trampled by a bull at his home Friday of last week while leading the animal to water. He suffered numerous bruises and two broken ribs. Mrs. Herman Bartling has been hired by the Board of Education as teacher of Kindergarten which begins Monday, January 17. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Lorenz are the parents of a daughter born Thursday of last week. The little miss has been named Micalea. Twins, a boy and a girl, were born to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Lubbert, early last Sunday morning, January 2. The new arrivals have been named Donald Ray and Donna May. The Lubberts have one other child, a girl.

80 Years Ago January 6, 1939 Funeral services for Jimmie Street, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Dwayne Street, were held from the Emmett Street home here Sunday afternoon and burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Jimmie lost his life in a fire which destroyed the Street home in Morrison last Thursday morning, despite his mother’s heroic effort to rescue. His sister, Patricia Ann, three and a half years old, is recovering from suffocation and burns at the home of her grandparents is a steam tent. Ilene Thede, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Thede, and Glen Rosenberger, son of Mrs. Fred Engel, were married.

90 Years Ago January 10, 1929 Miss Reba Gallagher, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. James Gallagher, was united into marriage to Mr. Leland Gethmann of Gladbrook.
