Rebels finish off unbeaten district title

GLADBROOK — The Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team coasted into the playoffs as the 8-Man District 5 champion by clobbering Colo-NESCO 56-14 in Friday’s regular-season finale. Colton Clark ran for 129 yards and three touchdowns for the Rebels (7-2, 7-0), who had already secured their district title after last week’s win at AGWSR. Clark averaged 11.7 yards on 11 carries and helped Gladbrook-Reinbeck rumble to a 42-8 halftime lead over the visiting Royals (1-9, 1-6). Eli Thede scored touchdowns on both of his carries, hitting paydirt from 66 and 14 yards out, while Keagan Giesking and Aiden Wyatt had touchdown runs of 34 and 20 yards, respectively. Drake Blakesley punched one across the goal line from 35 yards out for G-R’s final score. A 7-yard touchdown run by Brandon Roberts got Colo-NESCO within 16-8 on the first play of the second quarter, but the Rebels scored the next 40 points to put the game away. Francis Bower added a 3-yard TD plunge for the Royals, who were outgained 399-164 by Gladbrook-Reinbeck. Lane Bach led the Rebel defense with nine total tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and Thede had 6.5 stops. Statewide playoff pairings will be announced Saturday morning.

3 area football teams qualify for state playoffs Gladbrook-Reinbeck (7-2) won 8-Man District 5 with a 7-0 record in the first year playing 8-man for the Rebels. After starting the year 0-2, G-R ripped off seven-straight wins to earn its ninth-straight playoff appearance. The Rebels come into the 8-man playoffs 19th in the RPI, and they are the No. 16 seed. Gladbrook-Reinbeck will host the No. 9 seed New London (8-1) in the first round in Gladbrook. The Tigers finished second in 8-Man District 4 behind Iowa Valley, the No. 1 overall seed in the 8-man playoffs. New London also finished ninth in the 8-man RPI.
