Members of the GMG FFA Chapter have had a busy start to the school year. Recently members participated in two agriculture skills contests above the local level. On August 25th Zoe Duncan and Conner Murty attended the Iowa FFA State Livestock Judging contest at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. During the event they judged and placed 8 classes of livestock, answered questions on three of those classes, and presented oral reasons on three classes to judges. In addition they took a 50 question test about general livestock knowledge. The two received a bronze rating and Murty place 1st overall in beef judging for the day. On September 20th, five members of the GMG FFA travelled to Fort Dodge, Iowa for the North Central District Soil Judging Contest. This even tests their knowledge on soil health, soil horizons, slope of the land, general soils knowledge through a test, and many other facets of the soil and its chemistry. Each of the four soil pits that were judged had a 40 question judging card that were filled out. The GMG team consisted of Zoe Duncan, Layne Murty, Carson Wobeter, Presley Bland, and Brock Baldazo. The team placed 16th out of 41 teams for the day. Agriculture skills contests give our members an opportunity to expand on the knowledge that they have gained through classroom instruction and real world experience. They test not only knowledge but also their skills in the contest area and ability to make quick decisions based on the facts and information presented. These contests are a great team, knowledge, and career building exercise for our youth. The FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.
