Eric Keller, rural Gladbrook, is the 2018 recipient of the Lance J. Horbach Award presented by the Tama County Community Foundation. The honor was presented by Horbach at a Foundation meeting in Toledo on Wednesday night, June 20. In its 5th year, the award is made based upon an effort or achievement in Tama County which merits special recognition. It is named for former State Rep. Lance Horbach who was instrumental in legislation which provides support for the state-wide foundation program funded by Iowa licensed casinos. Keller, 17, was chosen for his 4H Tama County Swine Grant program. In its second year, Keller’s program provides feeder pigs and a feed allowance to kids who have not shown swine previously. It allows them to raise the pigs and show them at the Tama County Fair. “The first time as a 4H swine exhibitor I had trouble getting hogs to the right weight,” Keller said in explaining his motivation to develop the program for others. Through the Eric Keller 4H Tama County Swine Grant a 4H member is provided with feeder pigs and up to $700 toward feed costs.
