Tama Co. Economic Development By Heath Kellogg

Are you committed? There is an old joke in which a chicken and a pig are talking and the chicken says, “Let’s start a restaurant.” The pig replies, “Good idea, but what should we call it?” “How about ‘Ham and Eggs’” says the chicken. “No thanks,” says the pig, “I’d be committed, you’d only be involved.” (ba-dum-chssh!) The joke is meant to point out the difference between those who are committed on a project and those who are only involved. So here is the $64,000 question - Are the residents of Tama County committed to growing our economy? Quit trying and start doing. Never begin anything by saying, “I’ll try.” You might as well not bother-because you’re going to fail anyway. The reason people say “I’ll try” (rather than “I must”) is that they’re giving themselves permission to fail, which means that they really aren’t committed. It’s only through being 100% committed to achieving a goal that you’ll find the mental and emotional resources to follow through to the end. Here is a true story of what the definition of committed means. In 1973 a struggling actor named Michael was truly at the bottom. All he had was one script that he had written and $106 in his bank account. Michael didn’t own a car, and he was even trying to sell his dog because he didn’t have the money to feed it any more. He was so single-minded about starring in the movie that he refused the large sum of $350,000 offered to him by Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff. With the $350,000, Michael could have been very comfortable for a while, and it was guaranteed money! The movie producers took a chance with Michael. To make matters even worse Winkler and Chartoff were also only able to get one million dollars for the production, when they had planned on two million. They ended up spending $1.1 million of their own money by mortgaging their houses to pay the difference. Their gamble paid off; Michaels’s script was shot into the movie most of you know as Rocky. It became the highest grossing film in 1976, as well as leading to the six Rocky movies all written by and starring Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone. Rocky Balboa was the last of the six films and takes place thirty years after the original Rocky. The world-wide box office revenue of $1,271,000,000 is a long way from $106.
