Tama County Extension celebrates 100 years By Margaret Thomsen

The year was 1918 and travel was mostly by horse and buggy, very few people enjoyed the luxury of electricity, refrigeration was the block of ice delivered by the ice man and the one room school house ruled education. And there were a group of Tama County citizens with foresight to decide that Tama County should have an Extension Service. And as the saying goes, “The rest is history.” On June 10, Tama County Extension celebrated 100 years of dedicated service to Tama County citizens. Tama County Extension Director Cheryl Bruene said, “Extension has programs for everyone regardless of whether they live in town or in the country, no matter where they work, or how old they are. Extension is here to improve the quality of everyday life by bringing information that helps to make life easier. The purpose of our celebration was to showcase how we have been doing that over the past 100 years and how we will continue to bring information to the public in the future. Thank you to everyone who celebrated this milestone with us.” Bruene also noted that the celebration will continue during the Tama County Fair. Special challenges that are open for everyone to participate will be set up. Information can be found on the website at www.extension.iastate.edu/tama. Extension offices are located at 208 West High Street, Toledo or by phoning 641-484-2703. The event was held at Otter Creek and was well attended by 4-H youth, Iowa State University staff and a good number of Tama County residents. Hands-on displays were set up for all ages. Tama County Extension President Judy Morrison and former Tama County Youth Coordinator and Extension Council Member Jackie Skala presented an historical display of Extension through the years. They also showcased former Extension Directors. Who could forget recent directors Dick Pulse, G. Gress Rodgers, Dick McMullin, Dave Quinlann, Lorrine Matters, Ann Smith, Will Lester, Frank Albertson, Kellie Carlon, Zeb Grey and current Director Cheryl Bruene. Tama County Cattlemen grilled beef patties and everyone enjoyed birthday cake.
