The Gladbrook American Legion Auxiliary hosted their annual Mothers Tea on Mon., May 14th. Special guests were Dept. President Vickie Klinkhammer, and her daughter, Alice, who is the Dept. Historian, both from Dubuque, 3rd District President LaDonna Runner, Laurel, and Tama County President Jolene Denbow, Gladbrook. The Presidents all brought greetings and received a corsage and a patriotic plaque. President Jeanne Paustian opened the program welcoming everyone to the tea on a beautiful spring day. Amy Deimerly, Volunteer Services Coordinator, for the Iowa Veterans Home, gave a very interesting speech on the activities at the IVH. The Memorial Service was conducted by Unit President Jeanne Paustian, Rev. Barb Muhs, Poppy Chairman Jodi Betts, and Sec. Jolene Denbow. During the service, hymns were sung led by pianist Sue Koster; prayers lifted up, and a poem on Faith read. The Unit lost two members since the last service. They were Lorraine Gethmann, 49 year member, and Dorothy Landt, a 75 year member. A candle was lighted for the deceased, a poppy placed, and their family members were given a white carnation. Sue played TAPS. The Unit recognized two Gold Star Sisters: Claire Handorf and Darlene Hatcher, they both lost a brother during the Vietnam Conflict. Jolene and Jeanne passed out continuous years of membership awards to the following: 25 year pins to Ellen Hall, Julie Hooper, Marcy Knaack, Katie Rasmussen, Trudi Scott, Deb Harre, Janet Slocum, Lashay Smith and Linda Wiebensohn. 40 year certificates to Ursula Haack, Roleen Havran, and Ginny Zahnd. 50 year certificates and pins to Joyce Hutcheson, June Johannsen, and Barb Wickersham. 60 year certificate to Floriss Stamp. Over 60 year members received flowers: Lucy DeWitt and Pat Oettchen, 61 years, Marlys Boege and Janet Pryor, 63 years, Martha Gamble, Marge Grove, and Sandra Mohr, 65 years, Emma Moeller, 67 years, Phyllis Chizek and Dinny Nielsen, 73 years, and Maxine Schoel, 76 years and life member. Our congratulations to all of these members. Phyllis Chizek won the door prize a patriotic planter. The program ended with all singing “God Bless America”. The tables were decorated with flags and red carnations. Dept. Auxiliary President Vickie’s theme is “America Runs Free Because of Those Who Served Our Country”. Her symbol is the Mustang stallion, so horses were used to decorate the tables as well. Everyone received a red, white and blue book mark entitled “Our Nation’s Prayer”. Remember our veterans as you read it. Lunch was served by Marcy Knaack, Sharon Shouse, and Joyce Swangel.
