Vice President Pat Clausen opened the Alpha Study meeting, October 11, at the home of Avriel Koester with the quote “If you walk a mile in my shoes, you’ll end up at the bookstore.” Seven members were absent and 18 members answered roll call. The Secretary’s and Treasurer’s reports were read and approved. There was no old or new business. Kathy Herink on behalf of the program committee introduced Shirley Swenson who reviewed the book In the Unlikely Event by Judy Blume. Against a backdrop of three actual consecutive airplane crashes occurring in the early 1950’s in New Jersey, Judy Blume imagines and weaves together a haunting story of three generations of families, friends, and strangers, whose lives are profoundly changed by these disasters. But through it all, one generation reminds another that life goes on. Vice President Pat Clausen closed the meeting with another quote from an unknown author; “I have nothing to read”, I sigh, surrounded by my 130 unread books. She also shared that our next meeting of October 25 will be at the home of Maxine Schoel. Ranae Fagan will be the book reviewer.
