Maxine opened the meeting with devotions and a prayer. Fall decorations were the theme on the tables. Rose Mary and Barbara Strohbehn served cherry and spice bars with apple cider, coffee, and tea. June introduced the guest speaker, Fran Mueller from Self Help, Waverly. An organization organized in 1959, with emphasis “Helping people to help themselves. There are five different ways it works mainly 1) relief-giving immediate help when a crisis appears. 2) working with individuals in Nicaragua or Ghana. They have five on staff in Nicaragua and eight in Ghana. These people are the contact people who help with agriculture on farms so they improve their food crops-in Ghana mainly making high protein maize. The government has taken over this program now. The important project in Nicaragua is helping with the clean water supply cutting down disease. Another program is helping with a small loan so that women can start up a small business to help their children get an education. When Fran left she took along items our church had collected. Business meeting led by June Klinefelter-dispersement for this month were in memory and our second quarter pledges to the district. Rose Mary bill for lids and flats at Menards and to Self Help. Twenty-two people were out for program at Westbrook nursing home. The committee: Kay Lowry, Marcy Knaack, Carol Mead, Pauline Flamme, and Bonnie Murty. Upcoming Activities: Oct. 5-New bishop will be visiting here from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., Oct. 8-UMC conference at Decorah, Group III goes to Westbrook; Oct. 21-23-Mission school; Oct. 19-Local UMW, 9:30 a.m., committee is Anita, Pauline, Carol, and Becky; Nov. 8-Chili Election Night Supper. Reminder, pledges are being collected. Meeting closed repeating the Lord’s Prayer.
