The Modern Homemakers met on August 9th at the Brew House in Marshalltown for noon luncheon, eleven members were present. Janet Abbe was hostess and she treated us to cheesecake after lunch. The Modern Homemakers September meeting was held September 13 at the Garwin Library with Elaine Upah as hostess. Vivian opened the meeting with a quote from Thomas Jefferson. The Pledge of Allegiance was repeated. Roll call was answered by all 13 members was “Do you enjoy the fall weather?” Thirteen tote bags made by Martha Gamble and gifted to each club member were presented. Martha presented these in memory of her good friend Maxine Hagedorn, a former member of Modern Homemakers. Two extra bags were given to the librarians. Thank you, Martha! Wyatt Jackson presented the program on creating an “origami” in a small book. We all tried our hands at this project-this was a project Wyatt had presented at State Fair as a 4-H presentation. Elaine served her birthday cake, with lemonade, coffee, nuts, and candy. The October meeting will be a potluck dinner at the Carlton Brethren Church at 11:30 a.m. on October 11. Ethel Lucht
