On January 25, the Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School staff began a ten-week healthy lifestyle challenge, Live Healthy Iowa, sponsored by the Grundy County Memorial Hospital. Live Healthy Iowa is an organization determined to help people become healthier through a wellness competition. At Gladbrook-Reinbeck, the teachers teamed up into 3 groups. They tracked activity minutes and/or weight loss through the Live Healthy Iowa website. At the beginning, through the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, the staff participated in Heart Aware to help monitor their numbers. They measured circumference of waist, BMI, blood pressure, pulse, and cholesterol screening and used that to make suggestions on how to live healthier. All of the participants who logged activity and/or weight loss entries in eight of the ten weeks were put in a drawing, and four lucky teachers won a $25 dollar prize. The winners were Mrs. Aalderks, Mrs. Strohbehn, Mrs. Lennard, and Mr. Reynolds. The ultimate goal was to keep the faculty healthy, and the winning team included Mr. Boheman, Mr. Bailey, Mr. Charley, Mrs. Adair, Mr. Tessendorf, and Mrs. Nelson. Staff members participating in Live Healthy Iowa were Ms. Rowe, Mr. Swenson, Ms. Keber, Mrs. Lennard, Mrs. Watermiller, Mrs. Rowe, Mrs. Aalderks, Mrs. Strohbehn, Mr. Boheman, Mrs. Nelson, Mr. Tessendorf, Mr. Bailey, Mrs. Adair, Mrs. Scarf, Mr. Olson, Mr. Anderson, Mr. McQuillen, Mr. Reynolds, Mr. Charley, Mrs. Lindenmeyer, Mr. Formanek, and Mrs. Greiman. Starting next year, there will be an advanced health class at GRHS focusing on living healthy; the final project will be a health fair for people in the community to enjoy. Mrs. Andrea Rowe said, “It’s fantastic to see the high percentage of turnouts among our staff with the ultimate goal of being healthier. I think it’s good for the adults who work with our youth to be healthy role models.”
