Alpha Study

December 7, 2012
Northern-Sun Print
The Alpha Study Club met on Tuesday, November 27, 2012, at the home of Maxine Schoel. President Deb Wentzien opened the meeting with a poem “Christmas is Coming-A Turkeys Tale” author unknown. Roll call was answered by 21 members telling how many times they plan to entertain during the Christmas season. The minutes were recorded as read. The treasurer’s report was given and approved. Rose introduced Karen Handorf who presented “The Day the World Came to Town: 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland” by Jim DeFede. In the aftermath of the events of 9/11, we have all heard tragic stories of loss and devastation. None of us will ever forget that day and the weeks and months that followed. This book describes what happened when more than 250 aircraft, prohibited from entering U. S. airspace due to the terrorist attacks, were diverted to Canadian airports. Of those, 38 planed bearing 6,595 passengers landed in Gander, Newfoundland, a town with a population of barely 10,000. For the better part of a week, nearly every man, woman, and child in Gander and the surrounding smaller towns stopped what they were doing so they could help. They placed their lives on hold for a group of strangers and asked nothing in return. They affirmed the basic goodness of man at a time when it was easy to doubt such humanity still existed. “The Day the World Came to Town” is positively a heartwarming account of the citizens of Gander and its surrounding communities and the unexpected guests who were welcomed with exemplary kindness. Our Christmas Luncheon will be held Tuesday, December 11 at 11:30 a.m. Marcia Plett will be hosting. Please bring your purse, and a non-perishable item for the local Food Pantry. President Deb closed the meeting with a reading “A Merry Literary Christmas” by Alice Low. Maxine served a wonderful Dutch Apple Cake, candy, nuts, coffee and hot cider. Pat Goos, Secretary
