Gwen Elaine Wathan, former Tama County Jail administrator, entered a guilty plea to a charge of 1st degree theft on Oct. 25 in Tama County District Court. Sentencing for Wathan 52, of Toledo, was set for Dec. 27 by Judge Fae Hoover-Grinde. Wathan’s release on personal recognizance bond was continued. Wathan was charged on April 26 with theft and felonious misconduct in office by Assistant Attorney General Robert Sand. The charges came following an investigation prompted by a State Auditor’s report claiming a total of $46,752 was identified as undeposited or not collected in Tama County Jail room and board fees. Wathan had been placed on administratrix leave in November, 2010, and was fired on Dec. 14, 2010. Tama County Attorney Brent Heeren was directed to prepare a statement of monetary damages associated with the case and present it to the court.
