20 yrs. ago Oct. 23, 1992 The official ground breaking for the new Westbrook Acres was held on Sat. Oct. 17, 1992. Many community members and community leaders were present. The ground breaking culminates two years of planning for an all new 60 bed facility, to include a 20 bed licensed Alzheimer’s unit. The new facility will replace the existing 33 bed structure. 30 yrs. ago Nov. 5, 1982 Friends and neighbors came with combines, trucks, tractors, and wagons Wednesday to combine 150 acres of corn for Mark Lynch. Lynch lost part of his leg in an auger accident at this farm September 30th and had been hospitalized for several weeks. Earlier this fall friends and neighbors harvested 90 acres of beans for Lynch. 40 yrs. ago Nov. 10, 1974 In Tuesday’s General Election, 9,078 turned out to vote in Tama County. 335 less than four years ago. Absentee voters, totaled 566. The voting was light during the day over the whole county, but as time drew near for the closing of the polls all precincts reported an abnormal surge of voters to the polls. Some had to wait in line for over half an hour. 50 yrs. ago Nov. 9, 1962 Gladbrook won the Iowa River Valley Conference title with a 21-0 win over Radcliff here last Friday night. This made the 18th straight win for the Panthers, who since have added one more to the string when they defeated Traer on Tuesday night of this week 39-0. With such a string of victories you would think the sports writers in the dailies could do better than rate them 9th in the small school standings. Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Schultz are the parents of a girl born at 8:26 a.m. Tuesday. She has been named Debra Kay and weighed almost 7 pounds. 60 yrs. ago Nov. 7, 1952 Dwight D. Eisenhower was swept into victory for the presidency in a Republican landslide the nation over in Tuesday’s election. Eisenhower carried all but nine states. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Barger on Tuesday afternoon. He weighed 6 pounds and 5 1/2 ounces and has been named Jeffrey Wayne. This is their second child. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Denbow announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Lois Marie, and Don Gannon, of Ackely, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo M. Gannon, of Spencer. The wedding will be November 29th. 70 yrs. ago Nov. 6, 1942 Miss Darlene Busch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Busch, became the bride of Edmond W. Schmidt, of Waterloo, in a marriage ritual performed Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Marshalltown. Following the ceremony a wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride’s parents. Tuesday evening a wedding dance was held at the American Hall. 80 yrs. ago Nov. 4, 1932 Charles Radcliff, a resident of east Gladbrook, attempted to commit suicide Saturday night by shooting himself with a 410 shotgun which he borrowed from a neighbor. The charge glazed his stomach and most of the damage was done by powder. A doctor was called and in a short time Radcliff was around again. It was said that domestic difficulties were the direct cause of the rash act.
