Gym, classroom addition moving along by Andrew Potter Times Republican Garwin - As the cold weather hits the area, construction work at the GMG Secondary School in Garwin has moved indoors for the winter. The project - which is a $3.1 gym and classroom addition being led by Garling Construction of Belle Plaine is enclosed enough to be able to do interior work through the winter. “We’ll continue to install the mechanical and electrical finishes inside,” Dave Schulze of TSP, the project’s architect. “Most of the structure is up.” Construction personnel are also taking advantage of the holiday break to do some remodeling of the existing building, which is also part of the project. Substantial completion of the addition project is expected to be done by Aug. 20, 2010 to allow staff access in preparation for the 2010-11 school year. Overall, Schulze believes the entire project is going well. “The contractor is making good progress and it’s starting to take shape,” he said. One casualty of the project is the road south of the school - Park Street - which has supported the construction traffic. The road was not in good shape to begin with and equipment and other construction usage has made it worse. “It’s going to have to be rebuilt when we are done,” Schulze said.
