by Mike Bengen On Monday, December 21 we traveled to Ackley to take on the Cougars from AGWSR. We knew going in that this would be a tough test for us as AGWSR has had a very strong program for quite a few years. You just never have a night off in the NICL West no matter who you are playing. We would be ready and hopefully have a good night. The Freshmen started the evening off playing the first game. We came out and played very well the first half trailing by 1, 20-19 at the break. The third quarter saw us come out and go on a run and we played with a real sense of urgency. We built our lead to 4 going into the 4th quarter and never looked back. We went on to a hard fought 40-36 victory evening our season mark to .500 at 2-2. This was a very good win for us. It took an outstanding effort from everyone and it will serve as a great motivator going into the new year and the second half of our season. Great job guys. Jackson Clark led the way with 11 points and 5 rebounds. He was followed by Trevor Trunck and Jacob Smoldt with 7 each, Logan Koester 6, Jeremy Schlammp 3, Joe Zimmerman and Andy Meyers 2 each, and John Etringer finished us off with 1 point of his own on a made free throw. Logan also added 5 rebounds and Jacob ended the night with 5 assists to take or share team honors for the game. It really was a great effort by our guys. They played hard and good things happened. That is what we ask of them. Keep up the good work. The Sophomores then took the floor against the Cougars. We were a little apprehensive as we heard that AGWSR had really whooped up on South Hardin the week prior and South Hardin had really stuck it to us earlier in the year. We knew we needed a solid effort from everyone to give us a chance to win. This was a good basketball team that we played and we gave them everything they wanted. This one came down to virtually the final buzzer. We did everything right to put ourselves in a position to win but came up just a bit short as we fell by a 32-28 count dropping us to 1-3 for the year. We ended up on the short end but I will tell you this was as good as these kids have ever played. The effort was unbelievable. We still are getting used to the new systems both offensively and defensively but the part that is so impressive is we were in this game because we played solid basketball. We didn’t stick right to the X’s and O’s. We played basketball and we played with a purpose. It was just an outstanding effort and we couldn’t be more proud of these kids. What a great way to go into break! A positive situation that we will build upon in the new year. Great job and keep that edge. Kevin Trobaugh led the way with 14 points as he broke out of a minor shooting slump. Kevin knocked in four 3’s on his way to a 56% shooting night. Jacob Smoldt added 5, Sam Johnson 4, Ryan Volkens and Austin Charley added a hoop each, and Austyn Smith tossed in a free throw to finish off our scoring. Austyn also had team high honors with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Collin Widdel, Andy Meyers, Cody Umphrey, and Jackson Clark also were very important in this game. These guys all come in as subs and take care of their business. Each guy on the floor did and outstanding job and everyone should be very proud. We will continue to grow on this and get better every time out. Just a great job by a great bunch of kids. We will next be competing against the Pirates from Hudson at 9 am on Saturday, January 9 at Hudson. We then have a very short turnaround and travel to State Center on Monday, January 11 to take on the Trojans from West Marshall which is a rematch from game 1 of the 2009-10 campaign. See you courtside.
