Rebels pound the paint
Gladbrook-Reinbeck’s Samantha Petty pours in two of her game-high 17 points in the Rebels’ first win of the year, a 44-29 win in NICL West Division play against host South Hardin Friday in Eldora. The route to its first win of the young season for Gladbrook-Reinbeck went directly through the paint. Senior center Samantha Petty had a game-high 17 points as the Rebels defeated South Hardin 44-29 in NICL West girls’ basketball Friday. Gladbrook-Reinbeck (1-3, 1-1) went to Petty early and often and built enough of a lead to hold off the Tigers in the end. Petty scored 10 points in the opening quarter as the Rebels pulled ahead 15-4 and were able to take a 21-10 lead into the half. “Their height hurt us inside,” said South Hardin head coach Matt Thompson. “The girls adjusted well and we were able to stop Petty after the first quarter. We just couldn’t score.” South Hardin (0-3, 0-1) also starting making some shots to close the gap. Three-pointers by Danae Ziggafoos and Brittany Bierle in the third quarter moved the Tigers within 25-22 in the final minute of the quarter. “Tonight we went away from what was working. Our post has 10 points in the first quarter and we kind of went away from it,” said Gladbrook-Reinbeck head coach Dan Bicket. “When we tried to go back to it, we started trying to force it.” It was still a five-point game with 3 minutes remaining before G-R’s Lauren Bengen hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead. Bengen finished with nine points, Rose Koester eight and Keisha Smith six. “We’re improving at seeing the floor better and getting the ball to where it needs to be at the right time” Bicket said. “Turnovers are still something to be addressed,” Bicket added. “Taking better care of the basketball is something I’m hoping we’ll get better and better at as we go.” Ziggafoos led South Hardin with 12 points. “We couldn’t get shots to fall the entire game,” Thompson said. “We told the girls to keep shooting and they would fall, but just couldn’t get them to fall.” more...
